There are ruins of an old palace from long ago, such as 1,500 years ago, at the top. There was a king called Kashyapa who constructed his fortress there to protect himself from attackers. He decorated it with gardens, fountains, and even mirror walls. In order to reach the top, you climb these very steep stairs up the rock, through old murals and huge lion paws cut into the rock. Once you reach the top, the views are tremendous, and you actually get a sense of the history. It's not for people who like history only; it makes you feel as though you're part of something very old and great.

3. The Temple of the Tooth

The Temple of the Tooth in Kandy is absolutely vital to Sri Lanka, particularly to Buddhists. It's not an attractive building, though; it has a tooth from the Buddha. That's a very special, spiritual place with lots of history. The temple is incredible-looking, with glistening gold roofs and carvings. You can smell incense everywhere there. Inside, there are always people bringing flowers and praying quietly and performing the same old rituals they have been doing for centuries. Even if you're not religious, it's an incredible place. It's right on Kandy Lake in beautiful gardens, and it's great at night when it's lit up and drums can be heard during worship.

4. Galle Fort

Galle Fort is this incredible old place in Galle, located way down in southern Sri Lanka. The Portuguese constructed it in the 1500s, and then the Dutch extended it. It's this huge stone fort along the sea that has existed since time began. Walking around is like walking through history. There are cobblestone streets, ancient churches, and small cafes and stores. The sea view, the waves crashing into the walls, and the sunset make it a nice place to go out. Go for a stroll along the walls, visit some museums, or simply relax at a rooftop restaurant with a view. It's not old; it's a genuine neighborhood where past and present coexist.

5. Mirissa Beach

Mirissa Beach is sort of a tropical paradise on Sri Lanka's south coast. It's got silky sand, transparent water, and a laid-back atmosphere. You'll want to stay there for good.
